Woman Burnt by Family Members Transferred to Kathmandu

Banke/May 5 A woman who was burnt by family members has been sent to Kathmandu for further treatment following initiations from organizations including INSEC. Rihana Shekh Dhafali, 25, of Miyapur in Lakshmanpur VDC-8 was transferred to the Bir Hospital in the capital on May 5 in the initiation from INSEC, Network of Conflict Victim and Single Women, Fatima Foundation, SAATHI and BVS. According to Sarita Sharma, treatment of the victim in Kathmandu would be borne by SAATHI and BVS. The victim was taken to Bahraich in India by her family members on March 17 on condition of telling that she set fire on herself. They left her after her father Mohammad Samim Shekh Dhapali reached Bahraich after learning about the incident. He brought her back to Bheri Zonal Hospital on April 21. The incident came to light after Samim appealed INSEC Nepalgunj to take steps for the victim's justice and treatment on May 4 stating that she was burnt by her husband and his family. According to the victim, her husband assaulted her regularly saying that she did not bring motorbike, buffalo and other things as dowry. She added that he burnt her private parts with cigarette, saying that they set fire on her by sprinkling kerosene over her after tying her hands behind. She was seven months pregnant when the incident occurred. She had a miscarriage on April 24 at Bheri Zonal Hospital. Chief District Officer Jiban Prasad Wali directed the police to take statement of the victim on May 5 after which police recorded her statement. CDO Wali said that the incident would be investigated.
