Mother, Daughter Assaulted on Charge of Being Witch

Dhanusha/ May 15 A woman and her daughter have been beaten in Laxmipurbeg of Dhanusha by their neighbor on charge of being witch. Suraj Devi Yadav, 55, of Laxmipur Bagewa-9 and her 18-year-old daughter Sita Devi Yadav were beaten by Sajan Kumar Yadav, Rajan Kumar Yadav, Manavti Devi and Nishudevi on May 13. Among those accused, Ramoli and his son Sajan and wife Manavti Devi were arrested by the police on the same day the incident occurred, said SI Navi Akhtar Miya. They were charged under public offence, according to SI Ramesh Shrestha of district police office. The victims were severely beaten by the accused when her husband was out of home, said one of the witness Pramod Kumar Yadav. ASI Miya said that the injured are undergoing treatment at Janakpur Zonal Hospital. The locals said that Suraj Devi was threatened by the accused a year ago on same charge. No complaint has been made yet by the victim. Police said that the victims are not in contact with police.
