Journalists Mistreated by Police

Banke/May 22 Policemen have misbehaved with three journalists who were heading to report on the night cricket match in Nepalgunj on May 21. Kshetranath Devkota, the reporter for Mountain Television and Lokpriya Sandesh, Sunil Regmi, 23, working in Madhyapashim Sandesh and Radio Himal FM and Bhagatram Tharu, working in Prabhat Ghoshana were harassed by the police at Setu BK Chok. According to the journalists, the policemen who were drunk, demanded their license and documents of their motorcycles. When the journalists handed them the demanded papers, the policemen claimed that the documents were fake. When police constable Netra Bahadur Thapa began assaulting them, Bhagatram tried to take the picture of the incident at which the policemen snatched the camera and behaved indecently. Devkota requested them to back off but the police handcuffed him and put him in the police vehicle. Devkota told INSEC that despite giving their introduction as being sports reporters, they handcuffed him and later took away their two cameras and motorcycle. SP Shekhar Koirala, once learning about the incident and FNJ personnel arrived at the scene to free the journalists. During a meeting with the journalists on May 22, SP Koirala accepted that policemen were drunk while promising to find out their camera and covering the expenses of the cost of repairing motorcycle's damage. SP Koirala also said that a 5-member team led by Inspector Shashi Kumar Thakur will investigate the incident and submit its report within seven days.
