Province 1, Morang, Uralabari, Ward 4
In Urlabari of Morang, a family with surname Bishwakarma from the Dalit community stopped their 30-year-old daughter-in-law Kopila Bardewa (Pariyar) from performing rituals of her deceased father-in-law saying that she belongs to a small caste and she was treated indecently. Kopila is also the treasurer of Urlabari Municipal Corporation, a sister organization of the Nepali Congress and is into political activism and social service. But now she is performing the death rituals seperately at the house near the Barkha River which was provided by her father-in-law to her years ago as a present of accepting her.
70-year-old father-in-law Bhim Raj Gahatraj, who was also a Nepali Congress general convention representative and central member of the Nepal Dalit Association from Aaitabare, Urlabari Municipality-4 died on October 29. After his death, his four brothers, son, daughters-in-law and wife were jointly living as a part of ritual after death. However, they did not allow Kopila the second wife of their youngest 36-year-old son Divas Gahatraj to enter into the house.
