Girl-trafficking increased after India opened the border, 38 women and girls from Birgunj rescued at checkpoint

According to non-governmental organizations working at the border,  the number of girls being trafficked to India through Birgunj has increased as the brokers have started taking Nepali girls to India after India unilaterally opened the border on October 21.

According to the District Police Office, Parsa, 38 people, including 14 girls and 24 women, were rescued from the Birgunj checkpoint and handed over to their relatives from July to December this year. 

Nandakala Tomata, in-charge of the Women and Children's Cell under the District Police Office, said that a total of 73 people including 34 women, 28 girls and one boy were rescued from the border and handed over to their families in the last 12 months.

Police investigations have shown that girls from poor and destitute families, especially from the districts of Central Nepal and Eastern Nepal, are being trafficked to India by life brokers.
