Couple Arrested for Holding Boys Captive in Church

Morang/June 14 Police on June 13 have arrested Joseph Marandi, 45, and his wife Laulam, 40, on charge of holding 13 boys captive in the Immanuel Karsiya Church in Karsiya of Sorabhag VDC-3. A joint team of District Administration Office Morang, National Human Rights Commission Biratnagar, District Child Welfare Committee and police rescued the boys. Among the rescued boys, 11 are from Humla while two are from Morang. The couple is also accused of inflicting physical and mental torture upon the boys. The DAO had monitored the church following complaint that the boys were not being taken care of and the organization had not been registered. The rescued child are said to have been suffering from wounds in their bodies due lack of proper hygiene. The boys are from age 3 to 13. Chief District Officer Ganesh Raj Karki said that the boys have been kept in the protection of Child Helpline Biratnagar after conducting their health check-up in Koshi Zonal Hospital. The DPO said that the church operators would be charged under keeping hostage, human trafficking and abduction.
