Special Court Slaps Sentence to Culprits in Sita Rai Incident

Kathmandu/June 13 The Special Court has convicted three officials of Immigration Department of corruption in the case of Sita Rai of Bhojpur who had returned from Saudi Arabia. A joint bench of Judge Kedar Prasad Chalise, Mohan Raman Bhattarai and Bhupendra Rai on June 13 slapped the then officer Ram Prasad Koirala, Tika Pokharel, Nayab Subba Somnath Khanal with 4-month imprisonment and a fine of NRS 59,700 to each. The three officials were released on bail by the court earlier while police constable Parshuram Basnet was sent to prison. The three officials and police constable had looted the amount Rai after finding out that she had gone to foreign employment on a fake passport. Commission of Investigation on Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a case against the four at the Special Court a year ago on corruption. The CIAA had claimed that they had taken NRC 2 lakh 56 thousand from Rai. The District Court Kathmandu has slapped one year imprisonment and a fine of NRS 5 thousand to Khanal and police constable Basnet for looting Rai. The court had handed down a verdict of 5-6 months imprisonment and 50 thousand rupees fine to constable Basnet for raping Rai. Rai, who had returned Nepal was looted and raped on June 22, 2012. She was taken to Saudi Arabia by a middlemen of Pokhara in the passport of another Bimala rai.
