Police manhandles Human Rights Defenders in Siraha

Women Human Rights Defenders in Siraha have accused security personnel at Area Police Office Lahan of abusing and manhandling them on January 22. Durga Pariyar, INSEC Siraha representative, Renu Karna, chairperson of Women Human Rights Defenders Network Siraha, Dev Kumari Mahara, District Program Officer of WOREC, Anita Chaudhary, WOREC Program Officer and Kavita Chaudhary, psychologist were assaulted by ASI Kamal Bhattarai working at Area Police Office Lahan while they had gone to help a 20-year-old pregnant woman, a victim of domestic violence in Lahan Municipality-4 who was kept in a shelter on December 26.

According to Renu Karna, chairperson of the Women's Human Rights Defenders Network, the human rights defenders took the victim to the Area Police Office, Lahan, after the police called both parties for reconciliation but according to Karna, the victim was grabbed by the hand and taken out of the office under the direction of Inspector Suryanarayan Majhi.
