Three hurt as NC‚ UML cadres clash in Kailali

DIPAYAL: At least three persons were injured in a clash between the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML student activists in Dipayal in the run-up to the Constituent Assembly by-election in Kailali-6 yesterday night. Voting for by-election will be held tomorrow. The UML had organised a mass gathering at Fulbari-3 in Dipo Bazaar yesterday. The clash flare up after NC activists asked their rival party not to carry out any election-related activities defying the election code of conduct. Nepali Congress cadres Bhakta Khatri, Mahesh Lama and Arjun Chaudhary were injured in the clash, said Nepal Students Union Kailali chairman Binaya Lama. According to him, the condition of all injured is serious and they are receiving treatment at Seti Zonal Hospital in Dhangadhi. Buddhi Devkota, chairman of NC Fulbari village unit, said the CPN-UML activists assaulted their party cadres when the later asked them not to carry out publicity campaign, breaching the election code of conduct. The UML activists also burnt two of our motorbikes, he said. Chudamani Bhatta, district chairman of UML-aligned All Nepal Free Students Union, however, refuted the allegations. He said UML activists had not breached election code of conduct. “We were holding a peaceful mass gathering when the NC cadres attacked us. We didn’t start the fight,” argued Bhatta. Meanwhile, Prem Bhatta, a first class non-gazetted officer at the District Election Office, said his office had urged all political leaders against carrying out any activities in violation of the election code. Nepali Congress has filed an FIR against Bhuwan Rijal and Anil Subedi, two CPN-UML cadres, for their alleged involvement in the assault at Area Police Office, Fulbari Sunday’s by-election. Maheshwor Pathak of CPN-UML, Pushkar Nath Ojha of NC, Rajesh Bhandari of RPP-Nepal and Sundar Regmi of Unified CPN-Maoist are contesting the election.
