66-year-old Birendra Rai of Gaighat Shivalaya of Triyuga Municipality-11 in Udayapur district was found dead at a room of the house with bruises and injuries all over his body. Similarly, his 54-year-old wife Rita Rai was found unconscious in the field near her house.

Police arrived at Rai's house on the morning of February 13 on the basis of a neighbour's report that his wife had a fight with some people. They suspected that Rai may have been killed by a group of people during the night and his wife may have been poisoned. Police have arrested some people on suspicion of their involvement in the incident.
