The district court of Siraha has slapped a fine of Rs 10,000 each to Jagadish Mahato, 28, of Barchhawa VDC-1 and Ram Bilash Sadaya, 41, on charge of assaulting a woman alleging her for witch. The other two accused Jewacha Mahato,21, and Ram Jatan Mahato,30, have been fined Rs 5,000 each.
A single bench of district judge Binod Kumar Pokhrel on June 24 gave the verdict on the case, said district government attorney Rajesh Kumar Katuwal.
Hawari Devi Mahato, 65, of Barchhawa VDC-1 and Sabitri Devi Mahato, 35, were beaten on charge of practicing witchcraft by the accused on August 31. Both the victims sustained injuries in the beating. They received medical treatment at Nabodaya Poly Clinic on the same day.
The victim’s family had lodged a complaint at district police office of Siraha on September 1. Based on the complaint, the police arrested Jadish Mahato on the same day whereas other accused Ram Bilash Sadaya was arrested on September 9. Ram Bilash was released on bail amount of Rs 10,000 by a court order on September 20.
