FNJ Expresses Concern over Threat to Journalist

Banke/June 26 Federation of Nepali Journalist Banke chapter has expressed concern over the threat issued to Bhagatram Tharu, 28, a journalist associated with Prabhat Ghoshana National Daily published from Nepalgunj. Issuing a press statement on June 25, FNJ Banke secretary Tilak Gaule said that the threat of physical attack issued to Tharu is a direct interference on press freedom. He urged the local administration to take action against the guilty after investigating the incident and ensure safety of journalists. Jyoti Kharel of Nepalgunj Municipality-12 and Shila Kharel, an employee at the District Post Office had threatened Tharu over phone and SMS. Tharu received threats repeatedly after publishing a news on the corruption by government staffs in the June 22 edition of the daily. According to Tharu, he was threatened after he published the news of the accused taking amount under the pretext of recruiting in police. The victim has appealed District Administration Office to ensure his safety.
