The Lumbini Provincial Committee of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) staged a sit-in in front of the Lumbini Provincial Assembly demanding reversal of the media council bill. The federation staged a sit-in with black banners from 12 noon to 1 pm one hour before the start of the state assembly meeting to draw the attention of all the state assembly members about the bill. The federation has been staging agitation saying that the bill registered by the state government is anti-press freedom and autocratic.
speaking after the sit-in, Basant Giri, president of the Federation of Nepali Journalists, Lumbini, said that they had started an agitation demanding rewriting of the draft media as the federation had objections to the media registration, renewal closure, formation of media council, and penalties. He said that the FNJ would not accept the bill as it was against the federal law such as the Registrar of Communications could stop renewing the registration of media outlets and impose one-year imprisonment on journalists for broadcasting programs. It has been proposed that the Minister of Internal Affairs and Law of the state and most of the members will be the secretaries of the ministries. The federation alleges that the government has a vested interest in discouraging independent and professional journalism by keeping the council under government control.
