Kathmandu/August 13 Federation of Nepalese Journalists (FNJ) chairperson Mahendra Bishta has stressed on the need for separate mechanism for the protection of the journalists claiming that the unabated attacks on the journalists were due to impunity. He was speaking at the opening ceremony of the 3-day national workshop on "Role of State Agencies in Security of Journalists and Freedom of Expression", jointly organized by INSEC and UNESCO on August 13. Speaking at the same program, INSEC Executive Director Bijay Raj Gautam added that the program was focused on the journalists’ security and right to expression while citing INSEC documentation, he said that assault on journalists were several and that on several occasion, INSEC as a human rights organization had managed to save the lives of the journalists. INSEC Executive Committee member and Advocate Hari Phunyal also stressed on the importance of the freedom of expression and security of the journalists. Recalling that freedom of expression was a fundamental right, Phunyal said that the state had a role in scribes’ security and ensuring their right to freedom of expression. UNSEC Nepal representative Christian Manhart stressed on the need to end the attack on journalists while expressing that the stakeholders should consider about the journalists’ security and freedom of expression. The media was the fourth organ of the state and they work in risky situation so the state should be accountable for their security and rights, Manheart further said. Likewise, head of Administrative Court Chairperson Kashiraj Dahal said that the state carries out the role of protector a media as it was its fourth organ. He expressed that all rights are shadowed until the freedom of expression is guaranteed. UNESCO Journalists Security Project coordinator Laxman Datta Panta said that the journalists need security because it is linked to the security of the public. The program, attended by the representatives of Nepal Police, Office of Government Attorney, lawyers, human rights activists, will be concluded on August 15. INSEC
