Enactment of HRD Protection Law Stressed

INSEC chairperson Subodh Raj Pyakurel has stated that the law for the protection of the HRDs is necessary because they work in a special situation. He was speaking at an interaction program on the need for a national law to protect the rights of the HRDs and the situation of HRDs in Lalitpur on December 9, the International Day for the HRDs. According to him, in the recent times, though the number of human rights incidents and the attacks on the HRDs had gone down, the number of recorded cases had increased. At the program, CA member Kamala Subedi expressed commitment that she would do her best to enact a law for the HRDs. Another CA member, Dil Shova Pun said that the state had failed to make a law for the protection of the HRDs who endanger their life for others. Samjha Shrestha, the chief of INSEC's Campaign and Advocacy department said that a national law for the HRDs was needed to guarantee the minimum laws for the protection of the HRDs and to regulate their works. NHRC's Basu Bajgain said that NHRC was working seriously for the HRDs issue. INSEC data show that in the first six months of 2014, 82 HRDs were affected whereas the total for 2013 was 207.
