Khotang, Mahila balatkar ka aropit lai 10 barsa kaid sajaye. District court of Khotang has sentenced Sandesh Rai, 18, of Sapteshwor VDC-8 for 10 year imprisonment on December 10 for raping a 40-year-old woman with intellectual disability. A single bench of district court judge Ishwori Prasad Gautam issued the verdict regarding the case. Rai was sentenced for five years for rape and another five years for raping the woman with intellectual disability, said Shrestedar Bhisma Bhattarai of district court. The accused had raped the woman on March 10. Despite efforts from the perpetrator side to conceal the incident, the case went ahead following pressure from the district based human rights organizations, including INSEC, women rights defenders and journalists. The victim had lodged a complaint at area police office on March 11 against the perpetrator. He was arrested on March 13. He was later released by the police without any investigation on March 20. He was re-arrested on March 28 and was remanded in custody on April 11 following pressure from rights activists. The victim underwent health checkup at Bakshila health post on March 11 and at District hospital of Diktel on March 27.
