The governmental and non-governmental office heads of Nepal and India have pledged to control the human trafficking across the order. The commitment was made at a program organized in Pashupatinagar, at the entrance gate to India by Indian border force Seema Suraksha Bal (SSB) on January 17 with the objective of reducing the cross-border trafficking of girls and women. SSB’s deputy commander Ashish Kumar said at the program that coordination was needed between the organizations and government agencies of both countries to stop the trafficking. He said that despite the open border, the coordination can make the anti-trafficking efforts effective. He added that SSB has high vigilance in the Silguri corridor which is used by the traffickers or their agents to cross the rivers. Speaking at the same program, Maiti Nepal’s Shelter’s coordinator Hom Dhakal said that his organization had increased vigilance in Pashupatinagar along with raising the awareness of the locals to check trafficking. He added that the young girls were being taken to India in the pretext of visiting relatives or visit to touristic cities of Pashupatinagar or Darjeeling. Dhakal informed at the program that they had managed to stop 368 girls from being trafficked to India and that out of 33 women reported missing, 17 were rescued from different cities of India in 2014.
