Physical Assault on Dalit family while celebrating in Rupandehi

A Dalit family of Paderhawa in Khadawa Bangai VDC-8 has been beaten and mistreated on the charges of belonging to a so-called lower caste. According to the victims, some local youths beat them up for belonging to a lower caste over a marriage being held at the house of local Banshalal Harijan. Some locals beat the family of the bride for using a wedding band in the marriage of Pramila Harijan, grand-daughter of Banshala on March 12, the victim's family said. The victim's family has filed an FIR at the Area Police Office, Ranyaura on March 23. Four youths have been arrested in connection with the incident. Those arrested are Rajesh Lodh, 30, Mallu Lodh, 28, Dudhraj Lodh, 31, and Nagendra Lodh, 32. The accused have admitted the charges and agreed not to repeat the incident. Police said that a discussion was conducted between the victim and the accused. Banshalal complained that the villagers discriminated against his family on the basis of caste on various occasions. There is a legal provision of a sentence of 3 months up to 3 years and a fine of 24 hundred up to 25 thousand in case of discriminating on the basis of caste and untouchability.
