CDC task force member Narsingh Chaudhari said the draft constitution retained the word ‘and’ (mother and father) instead of ‘or’ (mother or father) as far as granting citizenship by descent was concerned.
Rights activists have been demanding that the children should be granted citizenship on the basis of the Nepali nationality of either of their parents.
If the draft provisions are retained in the new constitution, children wishing to attain Nepali citizenship by descent will have to prove that both their parents were Nepali citizens at the time of their birth.
