Perpetrator of domestic violence ordered to provide maintenance for his wife

District court, Banke ordered Anil Mishra of Belbhar VDC to pay a monthly maintenance amount of Rs 4,000 to his wife Puja Mishra who suffered from domestic violence. The single bench of Haripratap KC issued the order on July 26 to deposit the maintenance amount at the court every month. Puja’s lawyer adv. Lok Bahadur Shah said that the order issued as per section 6 (1) of the Domestic Violence (Offence and Punishment) Act 2066 (2010) will be effective until the final decision on the case is arrived at. The victim got married to Anil at the age of 17 three years ago. According to her, she faced mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband and in-laws since the day of marriage for not bringing big dowries. Earlier, Puja filed a complaint at the Women and Children Service Centre (WCSC) informing about the violence she was facing. She moved to the court after the family retracted on the pledge of refraining from any violence. According to her, WCSC mediated for a compromise on May 22 but the family again beat her up on May 31 but the police against brokered another compromise on June 2. She filed her appeal at the District Court on June 30. Adv. Shah said this was a landmark decision issued by the District Court in the district.
