Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has appealed the government to take action against the security personnel involved in the beating of a young boy during the public feedback collection programme in Janakpur on July 20. Fourteen-year-old Dinesh Sah, who suffered a serious head injury in the incident, is currently undergoing treatment at the Biratnagar-based Neuro Hospital. Issuing a statement on Wednesday, the NHRC asked the government to investigate into the case, book the guilty officers, and pay for the victim’s treatment. The national human rights watchdog has claimed that the security forces in Janakpur had used excessive force to quell the demonstration against the public feedback collection programme. People who were not involved in the demonstration were also assaulted, according to the NHRC. NHRC Commissioner Mohna Ansari-led team had monitored the feedback collection programmes in Dhanusa and Rautahat districts. The team had observed that in some cases protesters themselves had resorted to violence, prompting security personnel to use force. Meanwhile, the NHRC has taken exception to the use of children in protests and suggested the government to alert the authorities concerned about their responsibility towards minors.
