Normal life in the eastern region including major town Biratnagar has been severely affected due to the four day's continuous general strike called by the United Democratic Madhesi Front. Around two lakh students have been deprived of going to school due to the bandh. Government offices remain closed and the customs office at Biratnagar which is one of the main revenue sources for the government has not been able to earn any revenue as a large number of trucks carrying vegetables, fruits, food items, industrial goods, raw materials and other items have been stopped at the border town of Jogwani and Bathanaha. Food materials, vegetables, and other items of daily use are running low in the region.
Prices of vegetables and fruits have soared and patients waiting to go home have been stranded in hospitals. Sagarmatha Ambulance Drivers Association has halted ambulance service protesting the vandalism of two ambulances by bandh enforcers in Siraha and Saptari recently during the bandh. Even rickshaws, the only means of transportation allowed to operate by the bandh organizers have been charging double fares from passengers.
