As many as 194 elderlies in a remote VDC in Jajarkot district, who have been bereft of the elderly allowances for a year, have announced protest programmes, demanding the social security allowances. The elderly in Majkot VDC of the district has formed a 25-member committee in the coordination of Dhanbir Shahi to protest the VDC secretary’s failure to provide them with the social security allowance for a year. People aged 70 and above in the country are provided with Rs 1,000 on a monthly basis from this fiscal year after the rise in the amount from Rs 500. According to coordinator Shahi, the VDC has already received the budget for the social security allowance, but the office-bearers had not been doing the needful to distribute the allowance. Prem Karki, a VDC official, admitted that although the fund had been released to the VDC, some amount of fund was yet to be distributed.
