Couple arrested on charge of caste discrimination

Police have arrested a couple from Itahari sub-metropolitan city-8 in Sunsari on the charge of caste discrimination against a dalit family. 42-year-old Shyam Bhandari and his wife Sharmila Bhandari were arrested by the police on charge of evicting Shanti Gajmer(Bishwokarma), who is a tenant at their house for being a dalit. They were arrested after the victim, with the help of her relatives and human rights activists lodged complaint of caste discrimination against the couple in the police. In the complaint filed at the police, the victim narrated that the arrested couple had agreed to rent her two rooms at their house before Dashain. Following the agreement, the victim had moved her belongings and other things including carpet in the rooms. But she was surprised when the couple said that they could not rent her the room, when she went to the house on the night of November 2. They also threatened her to immediately remove all her belongings from the two rooms, but she refused saying that she could not do so since it was already night and left. When she came back the next morning, she felt very humiliated after seeing that all her belongings had been thrown out. Later she found out that the owners of the house had done so, saying that she was a dalit. Police are preparing to charge the arrested couple under the Caste Discrimination Act of the constitution of Nepal.
