2017-03-02

Province 1, Morang, Biratnagar

The Bakraha river flood victims in Morang district organised a two-hour long sit-in outside the Water Induced Disaster Prevention Division Office in Biratnagar on Thursday, demanding construction of an embankment to mitigate flood risk in their settlements. People from Tandi, Madhumalla, Urlabari, Pathari, Rajghat, Hasandaha, Amardaha, Govindapur, Sijuwa, Bardaga and Jhapartal participated in the protest. They have warned of staging an indefinite hunger strike if their demand is not acknowledged by March 8. Man Bahadur Shrestha, the coordinator of protest, said hundreds of homes were flooded at Matthillo Kaseni, Beteni, Dhhapad, and Khomjhoda settlements of Madhumalla in September and October of last year. At least 60 families were rendered homeless and they are now living in a hutment built in a forest, he added.
