Student's Hand Broken due to Corporal Punishment

Tanahun/September 28 The family of Asmita Thapa, 10, a grade IV student at Dobhan Secondary School at Kalesti of Kyamin VDC has demanded action agaisnt the teacher whose punishment broke the hand of the girl. The family of the girl met human rights activists and journalists in Damauli on September 28 asking for steps against the teacher. According to the family, a teacher Sarita Gurung tied Asmita’s hands in the back and placing them upward which has affected the girl’s left hand. She was punished this way for failing to answer a question during General Knowledge class. Asmita used to be physically punished by Gurung even in the past. The girl said, “Sometimes, the teachers made us take out our clothes and sometimes beat us”. The girl is in constant pain and has difficulty moving her hand, Buddhi Maya, the girl’s mother said adding when she went to the school to complain about it but the school principal said it was the girls fault. Local youth leader Anil Kumar Shrestha said that there were similar complaints in the past about the punishment on the students. The family had asked INSEC to take steps to initiate action against the teacher adding it would file a complaint at District Police Office on September 29. Prakash C
