Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Students of the Central Department of Education vandalized the Office of the Vice Chancellor (VC) of Tribhuvan University (TU) on Thursday over the leakage of the question paper of 1st semester exams of Masters in Education. A team of about 10 students reached the VC's office soon after it opened, pretending to submit a memorandum to VC Prof Dr Tirtha Raj Khaniya. They entered the VC's room and resorted to vandalism, according to TU officials. They smashed cupboards, chairs, tables, window panes, flower-pots and other things. Office assistant Kamala Thapa was injured by a piece of glass during the vandalism. However, VC Khaniya was unharmed. The students of M.Ed blamed TU authorities for leaking the question papers of the exams held on September 2, 4 and 6. The TU administration cancelled the exams held on September 4 and 6 but did not decide anything about the exam held on September 2. The exam of Foundation of Education was held on September 2. M Ed 1st semester student Hem Raj Thapa, who was involved in the vandalism, said that Prof Hom Raj Bhattarai, who is chief of the exams committee, too, is involved in the leakage of the question papers. "Bhattarai sold the questions to the students of Tahachal Campus in Kathmandu by looking at their ID cards. Bhattarai teaches at Tahachal Campus," he said. Thapa further said that it was an utter negligence by the university. "We just demanded to cancel the exam held on September 2 and reschedule the exams left," he said, "We vandalized the VC's office intentionally after TU did not scrap the exams held on September 2 which has affected 500 students." VC Khaniya said that the issue of question paper leakage was related to the Dean Office. "They had planned in advance to vandalize my office," he said. Meanwhile, police detained Thapa and Ratan Bhandari on the charge of vandalizing the VC's office.
