Maitighar Mandala to witness another assembly in support of Dr. Govinda KC today

2019-01-31

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

People from various walks of life are assembling at the Maitighar Mandala today at 1 PM in support of Dr. Govinda KC's demands. The assembly will then walk up to New Baneshwor where the meetings of both the parliaments will be ongoing.

The House of Representatives is meeting today a week after the Medical Education Bill was endorsed at the parliament. Likewise, the National Assembly's meeting, which was postponed for today after protests from the opposition, Nepali Congress is also meeting today.

The Medical Education Bill was tabled at the National Assembly four days ago amid protests from the opposition.

In both the parliamentary meetings, Nepali Congress is planning to continue its agitation against government's failure to implement the agreement with Dr. Govinda KC.

The National Assembly is meeting at 2 PM today while the House of Representatives is meeting at 1 PM.

Dr. KC is on the 23rd day of his 16th fast-unto-death hunger strike.  Since 2012, the medical crusader has staged hunger strikes for over 215 days to reform the medical sector.

The government, however, is unwilling to bow down to Dr. KC's demands -- an action the opposition, Nepali Congress reads as CPN's "boasting power of a majority government."

Former chief justice Sushila Karki on Wednesday visited Dr. KC at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, where he is now staging the hunger strike he started on January 9. Expressing shock at the government's unresponsiveness toward Dr. KC, Karki said, “Nobody will lose face by fulfilling his demands.”

Meanwhile, Nepal Medical Association (NMA), which began a relay hunger strike across the country from Monday in support of Dr. KC, continued its protests on Wednesday also. Besides, resident doctors at government medical colleges and facilities have boycotted OPD services since Thursday in solidarity with Dr. KC.
