Curfew clamped in Birendranagar after day-long clashes

SURKHET: A curfew has been clamped in Birendranagar after the town remained tensed throughout the day on Tuesday when clashes ensued between locals and police following the death of a youth.

District Administration Office has clamped curfew from 6:30 pm this evening to 6 am on Wednesday morning.

A youth died when a tipper ran over him near Gautam Chowk at Birendranagar Municipality-3 this morning.

Police shot several rounds of fires into the air to control the irate crowd protesting the death of Keshar Bahadur Singh, 21, of Simkhet, Mahabai rural municipality-3 in Kalikot district.

Superintendent of Police at the District Police Office Surkhet, Dilli Raj Panta, said police resorted to firing in a bid to control the protestors.

A tipper with registration number Bhe 1 Kha 2242 had this morning knocked down the motorcycle — Bhe 1 Pa 2178 — Singh was riding.

Relatives of the deceased demonstrated by burning tires on the road at Yarichok and Gautam Chowk protesting over the death of the youth.

Police have already arrested the tipper driver.
