Curfew in Panauti after woman, her child killed in tipper hit

2020-03-17

The Panauti town in Kavrepalanchok district, around 30 km east of Kathmandu, has turned tense after a tipper hit killed a woman and her child on late Monday afternoon. The District Administration Office imposed a curfew in its bid to contain the situation.

Chief District Officer Shrawan Kumar Timilsina says the curfew will be in effect from 9 am today till the next notice. The authority was forced to impose the curfew after the locals did not stop their demonstrations demanding action against the culprit.

The locals had begun the protest in the evening, during which they also clashed with police.

The security personnel opened fire to contain the situation, due to which three demonstrators and one policeman sustained injuries, according to SP Ravi Kumar Paudel, the chief of the District Police Office.

Claiming the police did not listen to their concerns but just tried to end the protest, the locals also vandalised a police beat nearby.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, the tipper (Ba 5 Kha 5480) had hit Jani Maya Gole and her daughter Smarika at local Maneshwari Bus Park. Seriously injured in the accident, they had breathed their last during treatment at Scheer Memorial Hospital in Banepa.
