Civil society members and cadres affiliated with various political parties have staged-sit-in at Birgunj against the new citizenship bill.  The parliamentary committee had passed a draft proposal of the new citizenship bill to grant naturalized citizenship to a foreign woman marrying a Nepali citizen after seven years.

The protestors alleged that the government had planned to affect the cultural relation with India by passing the bill.
