Men Accused of Murder Say They Confessed Due to Torture

Okhaldhunga/April 19 Chitra Bahadur Majhi and his sons- Kamal Majhi and Surendra Majhi of Palapu VDC-8 have said that they accepted killing local Gyan Bahadur Majhi after torture inflicted on them by the police and abuse by the local women. They were released on date after first arrest after the Office of Government Attorney said on January 13 that there was not enough evidence to incriminate them. The Majhis said they were forced to confess to the killing at a meeting called by local women on February 12. At the meeting, they were beaten up and dragged in the direction of Tilak Bahadur Ghimire and Peshal Magar, the Majhis told INSEC district representative. Chitra Bahadur said that local women, Goma Majhi, Chandika Majhi, Binita Majhi, Rama Majhi, Hira Maya Majhi and Chini Majhi had threatened to kill them if they did not accept the charge. He further said that following the torture, the locals recorded their confession and handed them over to Harkapur Police Station. Another victim, Kamal said at the police station, the then station in-charge Mukunda Upadhyaya interrogated them when they denied the charge. After that, the police tortured them for deviating from earlier statement, giving electric shock and dipping them in boiling water until 10 pm. Chitra Bahadur has sustained injuries on left hand while his son Surendra has injuries on left side of the back. However, on April 12 after Gyan Bahadur, the supposedly murdered man, came back home. After that, the detainees were released by the District Court Okhaldhunga on April 16 citing the statement of the person filing FIR, and checking the documents of the supposedly murdered man and his bodily presence. Investigating officer of the case, Bhagirath Remgi denied giving any torture to the father and sons. An instruction had been given to investigate the claim of torture at Harkpur police station, DSP Govinda Adhikari said. Police have arrested Hari Bhandari, a teacher at Tribeni Primary School, Palapu and Bhupal Majhi who filed the FIR on charge of staging the drama of abduction and murder. Police headquarter and Police Zonal Hospital has also dispatched separate teams to investigate the incident.
