Nepal Expresses Commitment to End Child Marriage

July 23, Nilam KC, Minister for Women, Children and Social Welfare, on behalf of Nepal’s government, has expressed commitment in the 5-point resolution to end child marriage. In a press statement issued on July 22, the Ministry said that Nepal expressed its commitment supporting the worldwide campaign to end child marriage during an international conference on “Female Genital Mutation and Early, Forced and Child Marriage” held in United Kingdom, London on July 22. Speaking at the conference, Minister KC said that Nepal will always collaborate with youths in innovative way in order to encourage new generations to fight against child marriage. She said that Nepal had criminalized child marriage. The statement said that Nepal government expressed its willingness to work with stakeholders and provide necessary technical and financial resources to achieve the goal. Saying that female genital mutation is not an issue in context of Nepal, she said child marriage is rampant in Nepal. She added that Nepal is preparing a multi-sectoral national strategy to end child marriage. She also shared that every three in ten girls of the age group 15-19 get married while four in ten girls are married below the age 18.
