The locals of Mirchaiya municipality-5 in Siraha staged a demonstration on April 10 condemning the vandalism of their houses by the local authority. The local administration had brought down nearly three dozen houses on February 10 and February 22.
The demonstration which started from Mirchaya went around Thana Chowk, Napi Office, and concluded in front of the municipality office. The agitated mass also burnt tires in front of the municipality office. They demanded alternatives to be provided, along with compensation, and land ownership certificates of the land where they are living.
They claimed that, their ancestors settled in the areas hundreds of year back and blamed the municipal authority for forcing to leave the settlement. The land was provided to the current settlers by Village Panchayat on rent to run shops and for accommodation. They also paid rent to Village Panchayat for using the land.
On the other side, the municipality claimed that, they vacated the area as it comes under the government land. There is rented (Bahal Bitauri) land adjacent to the pond in Mirchaiya Bajar. Also, there are private land and houses in village blocks. Though the mapping office had approximated the government, public, and village block land four years back, it is yet to distribute the land ownership certificate.
