Victim families Warn of Returning Interim Relief

The victims of Godar incidents have warned that they would return the interim relief provided by the government if their demand for justice is not addressed. Speaking on behalf of the victim families, Rajiv Karna, the brother of one of those killed in Godar incident said that they would return Rs 400,000 with interest if the accused are not brought into legal action. He was speaking at a program organized by Accountability Watch Committee (AWC) to follow up on the situation of the families of five young men, subjected to enforced disappearance and later confirmed extra-judicially killed when their remains were recovered at Godar. Sushil Pyakurel, the AWC chairperson and NHRC member said at the program that they were providing the report encompassing the suggestions of victim families, civil society, human rights defenders and journalists. He added that they had repeatedly nudged the state and NHRC for the victims’ justice. Mandira Sharma, the chairperson of Advocacy Forum said that if the government does not initiate action, the human rights defenders and the victim families would even approach international court. NHRC’s Basudev Bajgain said that as sufficient evidence was available in the case, the perpetrators would not be able to evade judicial process. Five youths were arrested in Janakpur on October 8, 2003 and were killed on the banks of Kamala River in Godar VDC-3. The bodies were exhumed in the period between September 6 and 19, 2010.
