On Wednesday, The Police arrested a person for refusing to permit the marriage of his son as the would-be groom's in-law father failed to provide a piece of land promised as dowry. Ganesh Shah, the father of Hari Shankar Shah, of Mahuwan-3 in Parsa district, has been taken under police's control after a case was registered against him by Mathura Shah Kanu of Lakhanpur VDC-4 in the district, stating that the former refused marriage of his son scheduled on April 29.
According to the complaint registered by the victim's father, the bride's side had promised the groom's family three kathha of land as a dowry and had already provided Rs 50,000 as a cash gift. But since the land promised had been kept as collateral in the bank, the family of the bride could not avail the land at the desired time. As a result, the groom's family called off the marriage. In Nepal, according to the prevailing law, give and take of dowry is a crime. Ganesh Shah will be booked under the Social Practices Reform Act- 2033, said Raju Babu Shrestha, Superintendent of Police (SP) at the District Police Office, Parsa. The wanna-be groom has absconded following the complaint lodged by the victim's father, shared SP Shrestha.
