Madhes, Parsa, Birgunj

Dev Narayan and Champa Devi Rawat of Parsa district have approached the police after repeatedly failing to find their married daughter at her husband's home. Rajmuni Rawat, the daughter, was married off to Birendra Rawat Kurmi, son of Mahendra Rawat Kurmi, of Bagahi VDC-9 in the same district six years ago. But when Rajmuni's parents went to visit her on 31st July last year, she was nowhere to be found. "Whenever we asked Rajmuni's parents-in-law about her, they would make excuses about her not being at home. And when we went to their house to meet her, the parents-in-law said she had eloped." Narayan Rawat said, "They also never had a concrete answer when we asked why they did not inform us about this."

"My husband took three local leaders over to the Kurmis' house and tried asking them about our daughter, but they did not give any reply," said Champa Devi. "We then filed a complaint at the district police office, asking for investigations," she said, adding that the complaint was forwarded to Parwani Police Post Rajmuni's parents said they had provided 54 sets of shirts and trousers to people who came to the wedding in their capacity as relatives of the groom. "Even though we couldn't provide them Rs 100,000 in cash, we had gifted them Rs 50,000 as well as a gold chain, a TV, a cycle and kitchen utensils," said Dev Narayan. Dev Narayan added that Rajmuni had complained about tortures at the hands of her in-laws just because they didn't provide enough dowry. According to her brother, she was sent back to her parental home while her husband was away in Malaysia.

After two years had elapsed, they pleaded with her to return to her husband's home. "With her husband out of the country, we don't know what his parents have done to her in his absence." Superintended of Police Rajubabu Shrestha said, "We acted on the complaint they filed with the district police but we haven't found any concrete evidence against their in-laws." They needed concrete proof before making any arrests, he said. Responding to the complaint, Rajmuni's in-laws only replied that Rajmuni had fled their house, police also said.
