Three vehicles were vandalized by transport entrepreneurs and workers during their nationwide transport strike (chakka jam) on Thursday morning. The transport entrepreneurs and workers enforced the nationwide transport strike (chakka jam) today to protest against the government’s decision to hike fine for violation of traffic rules. According to police, strike enforcers vandalized a TATA Sumo, Ba 1 Jha, 4813, and a Taxi, Ba 2 Jha, 2000, at Teku and another Taxi, Ba 1 Jha 1599, at Maharajgunj this morning.

Meanwhile, Police have arrested a total of 77 strike enforcers from Kathmandu for allegedly obstructing the traffic movement, said SSP Sharad Chand, Spokesperson at the Metropolitan city Police office. The government had implemented the new penalty structure from May 14 across the country after amending the old provisions of the Motor Vehicle and Transport Management Act, 1993. According to the new provision, any person caught violating the traffic rule is punished with a fine of a minimum of Rs 500 and a maximum of Rs 1,500. Earlier, the fine for traffic rule violation was Rs 25 to Rs 200.
