Birgunj industrialist Kedia kidnapped; driver seriously hurt

(Updated) Industrialist Suresh Kedia was abducted by an armed gang from Bariyarpur of Bara district on Thursday evening. The gang of three to four persons shot at and seriously injured his driver Shyam Shah Kanu before kidnapping the entrepreneur, police said. Kedia was heading toward Birgunj from one of his industries in Gadhimai area of Bara. Some witnesses said he was taken under control and taken to India on another vehicle. Kedia is the operator of Parwanipur-based Birgunj Food Industry among many other industries in the region. Photo: Ram Sarraf Shah was rushed to the Birgunj-based Narayani Sub-Regional Hospital. He had received the bullet on the right temple and, hence, is critical, according to the hospital sources. SSP Narayan Singh Khadka of Narayani Zonal Police Office said police have tightened scrutiny on border points and have launched a manhunt to nab the suspects.

Update... Birgunj entrepreneurs demand security Local entrepreneurs of Birgunj on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer in Parsa demanding their security. Their move follows the abduction of Suresh Kedia, a member of the Kedia Organisation. An armed gang of six-seven men, who came on a white vehicle with an Indian registration number, abducted the 56-year-old businessman from Baghaban along the Kalaiya-Mahagadhi road in Bara on Thursday evening. Kedia was going to Birgunj from Kalaiya in his car at the time. Bara Chief District Officer Krishna Prasad Dhungana said they have intensified search for Kedia. Nepali authorities have also asked the Consulate General Office of India in Birgunj for help in the search effort.

Marwadi community urges for foolproof security KATHMANDU, May 31: Following the recent abduction of a businessman of their community, the members of Nepal National Marwadi Council on Monday urged the home minister, IGPs of Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, to assure foolproof security arrangements for creating a conducive environment for business in the country. According to Chaturbhuj Sariya, general secretary of the council, the delegation members expressed serious concerns over the growing security threats to businessman, investors and entrepreneurs for ransom. The members individually met Home Minister Shakti Basnet, Nepal Police IGP Upendra Kanta Aryal and APF IGP Durga Kumar Rai and thanked them for the safe release of Suresh Kedia, who was kidnapped by a group of unidentified people from Bariyarpur of Bara district on Thursday evening. The gang had opened fire at his driver Shyam Umesh Prasad Sah before hauling Kedia away to neighbouring India. Security authorities with the support from Indian counterparts had released Kedia from India. The minister and IGPs assured of providing security to the business community with the arrangement of special alerts in crime-prone areas.

NSU leader arrested over Kedia’s abduction Police have arrested a central member of Nepal Student Union (NSU), the student wing of Nepali Congress (NC), on the charge of being involved in the kidnapping of businessman Suresh Kedia. NSU leader Birendra Yadav was arrested from Gadhimai-2 on Monday. DSP Binod Sharma confirmed the arrest but refused to divulge further information saying that an investigation into the case was underway. A group of unidentified assailants had kidnapped businessman Suresh Kedia from Bariyarpur of Bara district, after shooting and injuring his chauffer on May 26. Three days after the abduction, Indian police had allegedly rescued the businessman from Motihari in the Bihar state of India and handed him over to his family in Birgunj.
