Engineer lands in soup over bribery

Cadres of Netra Bikram Chand-led Maoist on Thursday handed over a government official who was held with bribe money to the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority in Makawanpur. According to the Chand-led Moaist party Makawanpur leader Gokul Dahal, Engineer Ramesh Maharjan of the Water and Sanitation Division Office of Makawanpur was held with Rs 45,000 bribe money. He has been kept at Hetauda-based CIAA regional office. Dahal claimed that Maharjan had received the money from representatives of Devidanda Drinking Water Consumers’ Committee in return for his service. Secretary of the consumers’ committee Gopal Timalsena said he had paid Maharjan twice earlier in return for the latter’s service. On his part, the CIAA regional office chief Narendra Bhattarai said investigation into the case was under way. “Now that the engineer has been handed over to us, we have launched investigation into both of them the one who offered the bribe and one who received it,” Bhattarai said.
