ISTU staging relay hunger strike

Institutional School Teachers' union has been staging a relay hunger strike demanding that the government fulfill its 11-point demand. ISTU began relay hunger strike since yesterday as per the decision of its second full committee held recently to pile preserve on the government to fulfill its demand. The three day relay hunger strike will end tomorrow. Today's hunger strike was led by ISTU vice-president Aruna Koirala who already has more than three decades of experience in teaching. Private schools teacher do not get salary on par with community school teacher. Among private school teacher too, women teachers face discrimination and harassment. She further said that the union did not even have 33 percent representation of women in the central committee, she said.There are only 10 women members in the 61 member central comittee, she said. ISTU, after the amendment to the Education Act, has been demanding that school running under Company Act, be bought under Educational Guthi. It has also demanded recognition of private school employees under the educational Act and educational regulations and removal of rule 112 related to private schools from the Education Regulation, among other things. Likewise, Professional demands include 25% increment in salary and grade, allowance for uniform for private school teachers and staff, allowance equal to one month's salary for festivals and implementation of past agreements. The government had earlier assured of provident fund, insurance and training to teachers. Expressing solidarity with the relay hunger strike, Dal Bahadur BC, coordinator of Teacher Society Nepal, said that the government was giving step monthly treatment to private school teachers. it is high time for the teachers to act as a political individual. Stating that the teachers in various countries such as Japan, France and other countries offer great respect to teachers,he said. our teachers also need to create an environment to gain respect from all spheres.
