Squatters picket Maoist Centre office

2017-01-22

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Hundreds of squatters from across the country picketed the CPN (Maoist Centre) headquarters in Perisdanda on Sunday and submitted a memorandum to the party demanding a squatter commission and homes for the homeless. They demanded land ownership certificates saying that they were necessary for finding jobs and doing business. The United National Squatters’ Front that led the march criticised the government for planning to evict the squatters from where have been living for years. They claimed ownership of the land they have been occupying. Neeraj Rai, chairperson of the front, said no squatter should be evicted from the place where generations of them have taken shelter. Protesting the government’s plan to remove the squatter settlements of Manohara, Bhaktapur, they demanded that the government either let them live there or provide an alternative. The squatters said they would picket the central offices of the Nepali Congress and the CPN-UML and submit their demands.
