Lawyers protest against Judicial Council’s decision

2017-02-10

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Of the total 800 lawyers in the Province – 2, more than 300 were present in the protest organised at the Nepal Bar Association here. The lawyers said that the JC’s decision had violated legal and constitutional provisions, particularly those relating to proportional inclusion. The NBA, an umbrella organisation of the legal practitioners across the country, had launched a series of protest programmes, including boycotting pleadings in courts, which ended following a seven-point deal with the Supreme Court. Agitating legal practitioners of Province 2 have demanded that the JC’s decision, which they claim to be erroneous, be rectified. The lawyers said that the Judicial Council’s midnight recommendation regarding appointment of 80 High Court judges when two of its members were absent was against Article 42, 140, 153 and Section 5 (1) of the Judicial Council Act.
