The representatives of the Civil Society in Sankhu have started relay hunger strike at Shanti Batika from Friday protesting the report made by the Local Bodies Restructuring Commission and demanding to retain Shankharapur Municipality.
The report has proposed annexation of Shakharapur Municipality into Kageshwari Manohara Municipality against which the locals have been expressing their displeasure stating that it would wipe out existence of the municipality of religious, historical significance.
According to locals, legend has it that King Shankhardev had set up human settlement in the conch shape with seven villages and a thousand of homes in this place before human made settlements in Kantipur city in the Kathmandu Valley.
More than 15 persons are staging relay hunger strike, including Dilip Kumar Shrestha, Sarisha Manandhar, Rajubhai Manandhar, Om Bahadur Karki and Gangadhar among others.
Parliamentarian Deepak Kuikel said that the relay hunger strike was staged due to the cavalier attitude of the concerned sides.
Locals, forming a 25-member committee with members from Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center), have been protesting against the report since it was submitted to the government. RSS
