Protest closes Simikot Airport

2017-06-03

The residents of Humla staged a protest after the private airlines companies only carried the pilgrims of Mansarovar during this season. All the flights to and from Simikot Airport were obstructed for five hours on Saturday due to the protest. The enraged locals, however, called off the protest after the private carriers agreed to fly the locals as well as their cargoes. The protest was led by the Humla Chamber of Commerce and Industry and district based political parties. The regional chief of the private airlines companies assured the locals of arranging flights as per their demands. “There were 20 daily flights in the last two weeks, but the locals could not board them,” said Namgyal Tamang, chairman of Humla Chairman of Commerce and Industry, trying to justify their move to close the airport. The representatives of Tara, Sita and Goma airlines reached Simikot for talks with the protesters. Indian tourists have started to use the Humla route following the closure of Tatopani border, one of the border crossings between Nepal and China, in the wake of the devastating earthquake of April 25, 2015.
