‘Maoist cadres threaten flood-hit people’

2017-09-11

Lumbini, Bardiya, Gulariya, Ward 9

Flood survivors from Gulariya-9 of Bardiya district have alleged that the local activists of CPN (Maoist Centre) are threatening them for registering a complaint at District Police Office against discrimination in relief distribution. The flood-affected people said the Maoist Centre cadres were resorting to hostility for reporting the unfair distribution of relief. Flood survivor Somai Lodh said the Maoist Centre activists recently surrounded his house and threatened to kill him because he had protested against haphazard relief distribution. “I and my neighbour Kashiram had to flee to the camp of Indian Shasastra Seema Bal for protection,” he said. Somai also accused the Maoist Centre activists of looting his mobile phone and Rs 75,000 cash from his home. Mahabir Godiya, a local CPN-UML leader, said the flood survivors of Gulariya-9 were afraid that the Maoist Centre cadres would attack them. “They have asked the local administration to provide them security from the Maoist Centre activists, including Nankau Lodh and Narayan Godiya,” he said. Chief District Officer Narayan Prasad Bhattarai said local police had been instructed to provide security to the flood survivors. Hari Prasad Pasi, ward chairman and local Maoist Centre leader, however, denied the allegation levelled against the party cadres by the flood survivors. “The flood survivors and the press are cooking up a negative story against the Maoist party,” he claimed. Incidents of political parties distributing relief in an unfair manner have also been reported in other parts of Gulariya. People affected by flood in Gulariya-11 staged a protest outside the office of Gulariya Municipality on Monday. They claimed that there was a widespread irregularity during relief distribution, where people close to a certain political party got more than their share of supplies while others received little or nothing at all. “My family did not get tarpaulin sheet and food materials. There was no system in place when the political parties came to distribute relief,” said Geeta Yadav. Another flood survivor Vission Teli said that he was even denied the food allowance announced by the government. “Many of us were ignored because we did not have any political connection,” he said. The agitated flood survivors have demanded the authorities to investigate into the irregularity.
