Agitating sweepers padlock municipality office

2017-12-20

Sweepers of Amargadi Municipality in Dadeldhura protested the delay in payment of their salary, today. They have not been given their salaries for the past three months. As part of their protest, they padlocked the main gate to the municipality office. They have been unable to receive their pay afterward chairs padlocked the office of the mayor and the accounts section. Dissatisfied with the working style of Mayor Bipin Ojha, the ward chairs had padlocked his office one month ago. This has hampered service delivery at the office. Binod Sharki, a sweeper, said, “We have demanded our salaries and warm clothes, but our demands have not been addressed, yet.” He also said the sweepers were compelled to protest as non-payment of their salaries had made it difficult for them to meet their daily basic needs. Another sweeper Bishnu Tamata warned that they would stop collecting garbage if their demands were not met soon. Meanwhile, Mayor Ojha, who is now in Kathmandu for his personal work, said financial transactions were halted after ward chairs padlocked his office and the accounts section. “I have tried my best to resolve the issue, but in vain,” he added. Ward-2 Chair Manorath Khadayat said they had resorted to protest after the mayor worked without consulting them.
