Central Department of Psychology padlocked

2018-04-23

Bagmati, Kathmandu, Kathmandu

Students of the Central Department of Psychology padlocked the department demanding a Counseling Psychology programme under the Central Department of Psychology itself. The Education Council of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences had decided to run Counseling Psychology Programme as a private course for the Master’s Programme from 26 February 2018. The council also decided to provide the authority of setting the syllabus, question papers and other necessary academic materials to the Dean’s Office. Prabhas Kumar, a student of Counseling Psychology who is also involved in the demonstration against the decision of the Education Council, said that the programme had been handed over to the Office of the Dean without informing students. He said, “The Master’s Programme in Counseling Psychology is a privately run programme by the Office of the Dean, while Counseling Psychology Programme has been running under the Central Department from more than 15 years.” Counseling Psychology Programme is run by only three campuses in the valley — Central Department of Tribhuvan University, Tri-Chandra Multiple Campus and Padma Kanya Multiple Campus. The Education Council of Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences decided to hand over the programme to the Office of the Dean saying that there were only 10 students enrolled for the programme and it was not fair on the students, according to Kumar. “Students have to pay a hefty amount for Master’s Programme in Counseling Psychology although it is a private course,” Kumar said. Dr Shanta Niraula, chairperson at the Central Department of Psychology said the decision had been taken by the Office of the Dean so they could not do anything to address students’ demands.
