Sudurpashchim, Bajura, Himali, Ward 6

We do not have any power and there is no one to speak on our behalf,” said the mother of a 17-year-old girl who sustained critical injuries inflicted upon her by her husband, who allegedly beat her to unconsciousness and subsequently threw her on a slope inside a forest. The girl, a resident of Himali Rural Municipality-6 in Bajura district, was badly beaten by her husband Lok Bahadur Baniya two weeks ago in a jungle and was left to die there. She was only discovered the following day by a herdsman, but not without serious injuries which required proper medical care. Baniya, a resident of Khatyad Rural Municipality in Mugu district, had reportedly eloped with the teenage girl on March 11. However, on March 15, a joint team of police and Maiti Nepal officials intercepted the couple entering India from Kanchanpur. The security team, during inquiry, reportedly found that Baniya was acting on the scheme of trafficking the girl to India. The girl was rescued and handed over to her father. The girl was then taken to her maternal home in Budhinanda Municipality-5 by her father where she had been studying in grade 9 and had also taken the examination about two months ago. The victim has alleged that Baniya again took her away from her maternal home on April 23, after which he pressurised the her to go to the Indian capital city, Delhi. “For three days he kept me at a hotel in Budhinanda. When I refused to go with him to India, he took me to the jungle and started beating me. I don’t know when I fell unconscious. Then he threw me somewhere. I only gained consciousness at Kolti Primary Heath Centre,” said the girl, adding that the man tortured her in the jungle till she lost her consciousness. Police rescued the girl after coming to know from the herdsman that there was a body 300 metres below the slope of a hillock in the forest, according to Police Inspector Kalendra Singh Bohara at the Bajura District Police Office. The police informed that the victim party had already filed an FIR clearly identifying the perpetrator. The police further said that correspondence had already been carried out with the District Police Office, Mugu for Baniya’s arrest. The victim has sustained a grave injury to her head while her body bears multiple bruises. Currently, the teenager has been receiving treatment at home through a local medical facility, following the treatment at Kolti Primary Health Centre. Her mother said that the girl had received all possible treatments available in the village citing that their finances could not afford better health facilities. “My daughter can only speak a little, but cannot move properly”, the girl’s mother said. The victim was nearly beaten to death, however, the perpetrator is still on the loose and authorities concerned are yet to provide justice to the girl.
