Amnesty International Nepal (AIN) on Saturday organised a rally in front of the US Embassy at Maharajgunj in Kathmandu in protest of US President Donald Trump’s ‘zero tolerance’ stance on illegal immigration. Amnesty, along with human rights activists, held the protest against the Trump administration’s ‘inhumane’ policy which has separated about 2,000 children from their parents at the Mexican-American border, Amnesty said in a statement. The protest rally, with human rights activists and AIN members in attendance, began at 9am from Narayan Gopal Chowk at Maharajgunj and marched past Chakrapath, the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital before converging into a corner meeting in front of the US embassy. Addressing the gathering, AIN Chairperson Rajan Prasad Kuikel criticised Trump’s policy and handed a memorandum to the embassy. “The ongoing activity of the Trump administration is totally inhumane from the point of view of human rights as well as for the world. It’s unimaginable, especially from a country like the US, which has stood strong by democratic norms and human rights protection,” said Kuikel, calling on the US government to allow the separated children to be reunited with their parents soon.
